Specimen:

EDTA plasma, 1mL minimum. Separate plasma from cells within 6 hours and store it in at least -20° C freezer, preferably in -70° C. Samples will be picked up by GEM Labs as scheduled.

Clinical Significance:

Quantitative measurement of HIV viremia in the peripheral blood have shown that higher virus levels may be related to an increased risk of clinical progression of HIV disease, and that reductions of virus levels in plasma may be correlated with a decreased risk of clinical progression.

Indications for Testing:

Prognostic assessment of HIV-1infected patients

Monitoring the effects of antiretroviral therapies
